This document may be read on at least two levels: the first, as the atlas which we hope will be very useful for those with minimal histology training and involved in diagnostic practice; and for those with more advanced skills in animal pathology, the atlas and the text will provide detailed information on the lesions in tilapia and the most recent review of the international literature on the topic.

The current success in tilapia farming may have a number of reasons but mainly founded on particular features of this species, which are highly adaptable to different aquatic environments and easy to grow even in small-size ponds. In this way, tilapia can be produced by small land holding farmers, but it also adapts very well to production systems with high technical development.

The total number of tilapias examined from the three data collection approaches may exceed 25,000 individual fish or perhaps the number may be higher, since on many occasions the Hematoxylin-Eosin (H&E) technique could fit up to 10 specimens on a single glass slide.
